The Toxic Avenger was a fairly enjoyable musical. Based on a movie, it follows the story of a nerdy New Jersey resident who is contaminated by radioactive waste, and turns into a superhero. He then tries to win the love of a blind librarian, and save the world from evil polluters.
The story itself is only mildly entertaining, although the acting is quite humorous. Many of the actors play multiple roles, and this is done extraordinarily well (especially by the Mom/Mayor).
There are a number of adult-themed jokes/scenes, and some mild profanity. There are also a number of silly scenes, such as when the Toxic Avenger rips the limbs from his victims body. It's all performed in a silly comedic way.
The music was modern/pop/rock, with guitars and drums. Some of the songs were catchy, but most were just mediocre.
Most of the show is spent making fun of New Jersey, which always makes for an enjoyable evening. The Toxic Avenger was good for a nice night of light humor, without any substance. Don't expect anything deep or profound from The Toxic Avenger, but it's not a bad show to see if you want a few laughs.
VERY Funny! The cast was amazing, strong voices and fun music. Not for kids, and be prepared-- the jokes are not necessarily politically correct (along the lines of avenue q type humor) but SO funny and a great night out, and more reasonably priced than most shows. A really great experience.
Campy and cheesy at times...which makes it true to the Troma roots! Diana DeGarmo steals the show, but has tough competition from the two 'dudes' who wore many hats, and a couple of dresses at times...!
Music was a bit loud at times, but they tore it up!
