I had pretty low expectations going into this show - I don't usually like Broadway musicals, but I did enjoy the movie (and the music in the movie), so I decided to see it anyway.
Unfortunately, the music in the broadway performance of Sister Act is completely different than the movie. None of the catchy songs from the movie are present in the broadway show! Instead, the broadway musical offers an all new score of music that isn't nearly as enjoyable as the movie.
The story in the musical is roughly similar to the story in the movie. There are lots of differences, but the main idea is the same. The musical was also funnier than the movie - there are a few good one-liners. Other than that, the broadway version of Sister Act offers lots of dancing, glitter, and sparkles.
If you haven't seen the movie, Sister Act is a pretty typical broadway show that tells the story of a singer who witnesses a murder and is forced to hide in a convent. The music is average - not catchy, but not annoying. The story is fairly entertaining - it's not the worst show out there - but the only thing I expected it to have (the music) wasn't there. That was a disappointment.
If you are a fan of the movie. STAY AWAY!! One of the worst translations from movie to Broadway. IN the translation, the show has lost all of its heart, its humor, credibility and an appropriately comical leading lady.
In the movie, the Sisters learn to sing and in that discovery you get insight into each and every nun. In the musical, the nuns learn to sing in about 20 seconds and you don't get to know them.
Music is very disappointing. Show is disappointing. See Memphis, Wicked, Billy Elliot but not this mess.
