I saw Mike Birbiglia's show "Sleepwalk With Me" about two years ago (also in NYC). Since then, I have seen many broadway/off-broadway shows, and Sleepwalk With Me was one of my favorites. I was hoping for more of the same with My Girlfriend's Boyfriend, and I was not disappointed.
My Girlfriend's Boyfriend is a one-man comedy show where Mike Birbiglia gets up on stage and tells you stories (supposedly) from his life. His stories are incredibly well polished, and during the course of the telling, he often goes off on interesting and comedic tangents.
Birbiglia's style is such that you feel like you could be sitting across from a good friend on the couch listening to him tell you what happened last weekend. He is relaxed in his delivery, and very funny. Birbiglia is a great writer and is gifted in his delivery.
During this show, Birbiglia talks about his thoughts on marriage, and experiences he's had in some past relationships. Since his delivery style often has him going off on tangents, he's often talking about other things, but always comes back the central theme of his relationships.
In My Girlfriend's Boyfried, Mike Birbiglia tells honest, funny, and heartbreaking stories about his dating life past and present. It was an entertaining night out. It's not a flashy Broadway show, it's just one guy telling a funny and captivating story. I saw his previous show, Sleepwalk with Me, and this show was very similar. I knew what to expect and my expectations were met.
