Energetic entertainment, enjoyable especially for fans of Green Day. The overlay of a story line is a flawed attempt to make something meaningful out of what is essentially a band tribute.
American Idiot was more like a Green Day concert than a Broadway show. There wasn't much of a story to it, and little was done to tie the songs into a common thread. As far as I could tell, the show was about three young men and their adventures in relationships, drugs, and the army. I would not suggest seeing this show if you are not a Green Day fan. If you like the music, and enjoy watching some good dancing and choreography, you may enjoy this show.
Green Day's American Idiot on Broadway was an incredibly average show. I was not bored or waiting for the end, but I didn't love it, either. There is absolutely no plot at all, nor are there any lyrics outside of the songs.
Each day, there is a lottery drawing for 20-25 front-row seats. The drawing takes place 90 minutes before showtime. On our third day of trying, we got lucky and were able to purchase 2 front-row tickets for $27 each.
Billy Joe Armstrong (Green Day's writer/lead singer) was performing one of the roles during this week. That made the show feel kind of special.
I grew up loving Green Day's music, but hadn't heard any of their more recent songs from the last 10 years or so. There were a couple songs I recognized during American Idiot, but most of them were new to me. The music was definitely more enjoyable than a traditional Broadway musical, but not great. Since there's no plot, the music is all there is. ...so hopefully you like Green Day music!
There was also dancing and weird costumes. At times it felt like the show was just an excuse to simulate sex and alcohol/drug use on stage.
Amazing talented cast. Great plot. Overall, an innovative musical. I enjoyed it very much!
