What a great show! I don't usually like musicals, but I found Next To Normal very enjoyable. The music was contemporary and upbeat, with a "pop rock" feel.
The story was also very good - it followed a family, and their attempts to deal with their lives. The mother also suffered from bipolar disorder, adding even more drama to their difficult lives. Although a serious topic, Next To Normal used comedy to lighten the mood. I thought it struck a great balance between humor and reality.
I left the theater feeling happy my life is so normal, and was still singing songs from Next To Normal days after.
Warning: Next To Normal contains lots of profanity and drug references.
A profound and moving piece of work. Requires thought--which is perhaps what moves it from "mere" entertainment to art. One of the few "must see" shows on Broadway this year.
What an interesting show. I thought it was deep and moving. The music was modern and catchy. The actors were all very strong and I found the story had me captivated. It was not a happy play, but I thought it struck a good balance between sad and humorous.
Brilliant!! Brilliant!! Brilliant!! Next to Normal is provocative and poignant!! Beautiful!!
Next to Normal is a revelation. Great music and performances that make sense of a very offbeat subject. Mental illness is not a great backdrop for Broadway but this show pulls it off splendidly. Alice Ripley leads the show and she is a fantastic singer and physical actress. BTW, the 1/2 star and 1 star reviews should be deleted in that they seem to be bogus.
Next To Normal is a great modern musical with upbeat pop/rock music. It looks at a not-quite-normal family where the mother suffers from bipolar disorder. It is a great combination of drama, music, and even a bit of comedy. Next To Normal is one of the best broadway shows I've seen.
A most interesting play. It reminded me more or less of a "rock opera." The play was well cast, the music contemporary and extremely well performed. Truly, it was probably a great play, but,I left the theater not totally happy because, honestly, the theme itself is depressing. Mind you, there was the odd humorous bit thrown in, and very cleverly done, too, but the overall storyline was sad. I felt sorry for every character in the play at the end. I thought it could have been subtitled, "No Winners Here." Maybe not a good choice if you're already feeling down.
too long... too loud... terrible singing... so sad... nice try
