I saw this while it was playing in London and was blown away by the production.
First, the set for Mary Poppins was jaw-dropping. The multiple floors of the house at 17 Cherry Tree Lane would move up and down when scenes changed. Mary Poppins pulled a coat rack, lamp, bed, and big mirror out of her travel bag and I still don't know how. I mean, it's one thing to see it in a movie, but on the stage you can't edit it. There were several flying scenes when Mary would fly around the stage, or Bert walked up the wall. The special effects weren't overdone, but appeared so magical because half the time you didn't see it coming or couldn't figure out how they did it. See a short clip here.
The musical version has been altered a bit from the movie. The general plot is the same, the songs we all love are still there, but some of the scenes have been altered or removed, and several new ones are added. Notably, the penguins in the painting are gone and the floating and drinking tea scene are gone. In their place we have dancing statues in the park and a woman that sells words (which leads to the Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious). The new songs weren't great, especially compared to the originals, but the dancing that accompanied them was often brilliant. The parents have beefed up roles in the musical plot which explores their rocky marriage, the mother's feelings of hopelessness, and father's troubled childhood.
The acting was really good. Bert (the chimney sweep) was the best. Mary had a really good voice, but didn't stand out that much. The parents, in their expanded roles, were a little bit flat, especially the father. The daughter had an amazing voice, but the little boy was tough to understand because he had a think accent. Because of child acting laws, there are 4 sets of children that perform on alternating nights.
Mary Poppins was my first broadway show. I saw it for my 13th birthday and really liked it. The sets were great, but it was a bit different than the movie. The music was fun and happy.
Nobody does musicals like Disney, and this one was no exception. The imagery on stage was spectacular. The set was impressive with a multi-level moving house. The park scene was also quite glitzy with colors magically appearing everywhere.
The story was a bit different from the movie - it actually seemed to have been expanded with more plot. Most of the songs were modified versions of songs from the movie, with a few news ones added in. There were a lot of great song and dance numbers. Although the show is definately great for kids, adults who enjoy musicals will also enjoy the show, especially if you liked the movie. The story wasn't deep or moving, but the show was entertaining and a fun experience.
Awesome Broadway musical featuring your musical favorites from the movie as well as brand new ones, this incarnation also seems to have more plot and well developed characters. Besides all the singing and dancing this show features spectacular sets and a dazzling departure by Marry Poppins at the end.
I Loved the cast, dancing, and music. I can't wait for it to come to Columbus so I can see it again! Marry Poppins does every trick from the movie plus more. Its so amazing when you see every one looking up at Mary's heals as she flies right over your head
Stunning set, all the songs we know and love and a great cast. I've seen better child actors, but they were well-trained and enthusiastic. Mary was amazing, she got the character down to a tee. Bert was my favourite, but then I do have a penchant for comedic characters. Overall, go and see it. It was amazing!
