A Life in the Theatre is a play by David Mamet. I have seen one of his plays before and found it a little hard to enjoy. I thought I would give it another shot, but I did not enjoy this one much more.

The show was mildly entertaining, but the only reason I found to go to this Broadway production is for the big star actors. The show had many short scenes with some impressive fast costume and set changes. Each scene built the characters and their relationship further. This play was not about a story (which did not exist) but about character building, and that's just not my choice of play. I also found the comedy to be a bit cliche and predictable, but it did get me laughing several times.

Until I saw this play, I would tell people that there really are NO bad plays on Broadway. I have revised that opinion. True - seeing Jean Luc (Patrick Stewart previously from Startrek) and George (T.R. Knight previously of Grey's Anatomy)was a thrill. But I have no idea why this was billed as a comedy. The audience was laughing at anything - an ordinary word, or a pause. Darned if I could figure out what was so funny. No plot. No connected thread of any type that I could determine. I just sat through the whole thing thinking, wow, taking 5 people to this play cost us (with 50% off tickets)$360. I kept thinking of how much more fun I could have had spent that cash. In fact, I would have had more fun if I spent nothing and stayed home and read a book. Or maybe getting my teeth cleaned. Go see something else. Anything.

A one act 90 minute play with 30 disjointed scenes.

In spite of its stellar cast, 2nd worst play that |I've experienced on Broadway or anywhere else. Even the acting seemed stilted.

Save your $$$, go to a movie.
